Often times, a person’s desire to quickly get started on a record suspension (rs), formally a pardon, means their glance through the Record Suspension Application Guide will leave them with the impression they need a background check. (Sometimes called a police check, name check, police certificate, CIPC (pronounced “see-pick), or other names.)

The guide actually reads, “Get your Local Police Records Check(s)” but to someone who is determined to begin the process quickly, this seems to call for a CPIC and a CPIC they can do right now, themselves.

What they overlook is that the guide mentions the Local Police Records Checks (LPRC) as Step 4 but steps 1, 2, and 3 should be looked at first as each step in the process builds on the previous steps. Information returned in Step 1 should be utilized to complete Step 2 and on it goes until all the steps have been completed. I suspect the problem with these steps (for people who want to get it done quickly) is the time lag between taking the step and actually completing the step.

Step 1 requires you get fingerprints so the RCMP can release your Criminal Record. Impact Pardons can book a fingerprint appointment for you and send your fingerprints digitally to the RCMP today but the RCMP may still take from 8 to 12 weeks (or more) to return your criminal record. It’s during the 3rd, 4th, and 5th week people get anxious and in an effort to “hurry things along”, go ahead and get documents they don’t need.

That’s money spent that doesn’t need to be spent. The price of doing your rs yourself just went up. Other things like allowing documents to time out, not including an affidavit when required or not checking the accuracy of the court records can – and often will– put the cost of a ‘DIY’ rs application beyond our IPP Consult fee. Only you know how distressed you would be to see your rs application returned to you with a ‘still-to-do’ list from the Parole Board of Canada.
